Henri Bergson’s essay “Laughter” is perhaps the one of the most influential and sophisticated theories of humor. Bergson’s theory of humor is not easily classifiable, since it has elements of superiority and incongruity theories. In a famous phrase, Bergson argues that the source of humor is the “mechanical encrusted upon the living”… He thinks that humor involve an incongruous relationship between human intelligence and habitual or mechanical behaviors (Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy).
